Chapter Eleven

After catching Anna and Adam up on everything, Neku and the rest of their expanded nest helped Anna to assimilate to being a vampire and Angus, in turn, helped Adam with his new witch powers.

It hurt AJ to know he’d never be a witch, like his parents. Angus traded his for vampirism, of course, but it was going to be hard on him, the switch from one to the other. Still, Za was right there, for all of them. He fetched them blood, helped them get their new powers under control, and never lost sight of AJ.

Anna lifted from the ground with her new power of levitation, floating there, against the ceiling of the cave. Once she was talked back to the ground by her brother, however, she smiled over to the others and explained, “I’m taking a break to talk to my son.”

AJ swallowed, knowing a lecture was coming, and once Anna got him into the back of the cave, where they were alone, she swiped her hand in the air, creating an invisible field to block out sounds from escaping. “That’s so we aren’t overheard with this damn echo.”

“Good thinking, Mom!” He was trying to kiss a little ass, but she wasn’t having it.

As she turned, he saw her eyes were glowing, and though he had the same eyes and their protections like Adam had, he still felt a pull in the middle of him. It was almost painful. The witch in her was taking on the vampire in him. Angry as she was at him, if she could turn him to stone, he was certain he’d be granite right then.

“Forget the sheer stupidity of having a recurring dream and not telling me. Forget the fact that when you started to see him, see things, like a goddamn crystal turning black, you didn’t tell me.”

Dumbfounded, he stammered, “H-how did you…how could you know that?”

A smug little grin spread on her cherry lips, so dark they were now compared to her pale, vampire skin. “I can read your thoughts now. I can read everyone’s.” The smirk left her for a deep scowl, and she sat on a low boulder, covering her face with her hands. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t read your mind. I never wanted to invade your privacy.”

“Mom, you can’t help it. This all, it’s my fault for letting him in my head. I should have blocked him, but I felt…I felt like I knew him.”

Anna took AJ’s hand into both of hers and hushed him. “You felt like you knew him because your past lives did. You’ve been connected over rivers and mountains of time, son. I felt like that with Angus, the moment I knew I loved him. Maybe that is true too. Who knows? We could have past lives together as well. The point is, he saved you. Sure, I wish he had before you had to become a vampire, but…well, things happen. Especially to our family. I don’t see how this all did though.
